Loose PTO Coupler

My 1950 8N has been in our family for 2 years. Love the tractor! I was told I'm only the third owner, but who knows for sure. Always runs great but I've started to notice that the PTO coupler seems to be getting looser. Should there be any play to it, if so how much? How hard would it be to take it apart and look at it?

PTO coupler? Do you mean the ORC? (over-running clutch)

If it's the ORC, you aren't taking it apart. Just remove the grease zerk & drive out the roll pin w/ a drift. The pin is probably loose/worn. Caution: Put your glasses on & do not use a drift so small that it fits inside the roll pin. (don't ask.....)

Do you mean the over run clutch or the PTO coupler to the implement?

the implement coupler has a little play in it. The over run clutch shouldent have much play but i have had some that did but they worked just fine for years.

I'm refering to the implement coupler. To me it seems really loose and once I let out the clutch, it almost seems to want to sheer off. Maybe I'm being to cautious.

Bruce,
Some of them are able to be disassembled and rebuilt (we sell a kit for those made by Hub City). Not something that everybody should try...I could see a newbie getting into deep poop.

One large snap ring at the front does it!

clif,

OK...I read your initial post the same way Bruce did...sorry. Are you then saying that the U joint spider is worn?
