Low oil pressure

I have a 48 8N that starts and runs perfectly and has plenty of power. I've run it for 5-6 hours straight plowing, discing, and mowing with no problems. It does not burn or use any oil. My question is this- when I first start up I have 20 pounds of oil pressure which goes down to zero in a short time. Should I be concerned with the low pressure?

Probably. I'd get a new gauge first, and go to a higher weight oil. If that doesn't help, I'd say your pump and/or main bearings are close to needing last rites.

BGlynn,You could try checking and comparing with a test gauge attached to the fitting where the oil pressure gauge line hooks up.To see if your original gauge is correct. If its still low change the oil and filter and use some 40# or 50# straight weight HD oil that should get your oil pressure up some.Other than that a rebuild Pump, Mains and Rods.

While running the engine, loosen the fitting at the oil pressure gauge and see if any air comes out. I found this to be a problem with 2 of my N's.

Ditto everything said here... check gauge, use heavier oil, and check the oil pressure relief spring.

After that.. might throw in some main and rod shells..as a quickie.. etc..
