What is the best (inexpensive) way to refuel your lp tractors? my local distributor wants $2000.00 for a pump system I only use 3 or 4 hundred gallons a year in a u302 and g705 thanks bob

I use one liquid hose from the tank to the tractor. Open the fuel gauge valve a few turns to let vapor out. If you are in a hurry , get an adaptor that opens the vapor valve and a pipe elbow to direct the vapor away from you and the tractor.
YES, you will loose a very small amount of vapor. The cost difference between the set up your fuel guy wants to sell you wil never off set the cost of lost vapor.
I have filled my M-M s from about 1960 this way. Would not even think about a vapor pump.clint

I fill mine the same way oleclint does, he was kinda my adviser when I started buying LP tractors. Works well and the thing to remember is CONTROL, if you have control of the gas, nothing bad will happen.

I know nothing about filling from a lp tank , that being said several years ago I purchased a 500 gal lp tank for heating use and at the very bottom is a valve , the tech from the my lp provider at the time that sold me the regulators explained to me this valve was for attaching a hose to and filling tractors and such from . it is equipped with a check valve in the event that the mechanical valve fails or is damaged . some one else maybe able to post a comment on this .

I didn't know any other way to fill a tractor but by the liquid hose to the tank with a brass bleeder valve to blow off excess vapor pressure as a kid growing up.

Dad only had two LP 4020s until I was in high school and by the time I was in 5th or 6th grade I was filling them by myself.

Looking at it now, I guess it was/is a little dangerous blowing off vapor, but out of the many years people out here have done that and thousands upon thousands of times they've refueled, I've only known of one accident - and that is when I guy that hadn't worked on a farm before lit a cigarette while standing next to the tank filling.

My biggest worry as a kid was sometimes that if you didn't catch it just as it filled up, that brass bleeder would get so frosty/frozen cold it would stick to your hand while you were trying to get it off...

LP since 1957 use hose from tank and vapor bleed off on tractor tank and often filled by connecting the filler hose and letting the tractor set overnight to fill. Do not fill past 80% unless you are immediatly going to use the tractor.

I always hated trying to get that brass bleeders loose also. They get cold quick. My dad always wished my grandfather would have been buying diesel tractors, but he bought a ZAU, UB special, G1000 row crop, and M670 all on lp. They are all still in the family, but now we have about 20 more on diesel.

oleclint I guess we need to get on the same page I have a 500 gal. LP tank at the house for heat , so what do i connect to what ?????????? you have 2 fittings on the tractor one bigger than the other and a bleeder or little valve you open to let vapor out and close when liquid comes out when refueling the normal way, sorry I need a book on lp for dummies

Speaking of LP, anyone ever try changing the tractor tank gauge. I dont how to get the 4 screws out there so rusted.

Dale, don't try to remove them. Get a "drive" screwdriver and try turning them in - tighten them. This will break the rust and then they can be turned out without breaking. You may have to drive them in and then out a few times to get them working. Use lots of penetrating oil around the gauge before and after you get them loose. If you do break a screw, stuff a rag in the opening after removing the gauge and drill them out and re-tap. The screws are easy to drill. NEVER put the old screw back in, new ones are cheap.

I have 55/60 LP tractors and have done this on a lot of them.

That safety valve is called a slug valve, It will slug the flow off in the event it flows more than its rated. Like the hose gets blowed off or something, etc. The valves on a tractor tank have the same feature and its pretty std on lp valves.

Sorry that i forgot to mention a few things about storage tanks & hose sizes . been doing it for so long I just overlooked it . On the storage tank see/ ask some one that s familuar with a tank that has a "wet leg" in it . If it does you will get liquid off the tank top valving. If no wet leg , then put the bigger hose on the bottom valve, be sure that this valve is in good shape , as it mite leak after several times of useing it.At todays prices , LPG is to expensive to loose. clint

We used to fill them in the summer while at lunch, we always had a cold wet burlap potato sack laid over the tractor tank, to cool it off and to get more gas in.

Thats funny! I remember sitting out in the field one time for lunch during harvest with everything shut off & quiet and the summer sun beating down 110 degrees - when the pop-off valve blew on the fill tank! Talk about get your attention in a hurry!

I always tried to never overfill a tank because of that type of problem...
