Lube for installing engine Wet Sleeves

I have managed to lose my bottle of Engine assembly Lube and I dont really want to use Vaseline on the O-rings on the sleeves.

Any suggestions?

One does not want to use any petroleum product on those o-rings. Dish soap works well, and won't contaminate either the water or oil. A silicone o-ring lube will work as well. zuhnc

I used liquid dish soap on the last ones I installed. As stated don't ever use any petroleum product on the o-rings.

I've always used Dawn dish soap on all the wet sleeve engines I have worked on

I agree with the dish soap. However, if you’ve got extra money to burn and you really want to do it by the book, John Deere sells a wet sleeve o-ring install product.
It’s more than you’ll ever use. The last time I used it, I borrowed a bottle.

silicone oil was recommended to me years ago, I bought a bottle of it and it works great!

I use silicon dielectric compound (Tune up grease) I use it on most o-rings.

Murphy's vegetable oil soap. Right at your local grocery store.

good thing u lost it as never use any oil product on them o rings! use dish soap or brake fluid.

KY jelly works well for lots of that stuff too.I always keep a tube in my garage toolbox,and another in my plumbing box.Works really great on rubber plumbing parts.It doesn't attack anything.When I worked for JD we always had the JD approved stuff around.I had a friend that was a Cummins mechanic back then,(mostly 855's and 927's) and he used to buy the JD stuff. He said it was far better than what Cummins supplied.

yes the giant John Deere 308 liner soap will last forever. Ive been using it to install uncooperative tires lately. It works great in both cases. It is 45 bucks a bottle so I don't use it on all the tires but skid loaders with the rim guard once you use that you won't go back to the dawn or even the Murphys for that particular task.

“ Lubricate the oring with clean engine oil and carefully install oring into the crankcase groove” and “ put clean engine oil onto the sealing faces of each cylinder liner”, kinda shoots down the not to use oil theory

It all depends on the sleeve o-rings, I have seen dishsoap, vegetable oil, engine oil, silicone lube, the best bet is read the service manual or the info that comes with the kit, some kits have different o-rings than the original, so just go by what they say, you can cause an o-ring to swell and pinch or bind a piston up pretty easy, I have never personally done so but have heard from some friends that had that happen!

Been thinking about that also. Them o rings in hyd couplers are oil soaked steady. I don’t see them swelled up. But “do not use oil “has been drilled in my head forever. Unless they are oil resistant like fuel hose. . Need to throw an o ring in oil and see what happens to see if they are indeed oil resistant.

sleeve o rings are different material, sometimes, I know a guy that smoked a couple sleeves and pistons on a brand new overhaul in a 855 cummins using the wrong lube, he worked for IH truck shop, anyway you are pretty much always with dawn dishsoap, if in doubt go to that or reach to kit supplier, if they don't know then thats not good! Dawn or Ivory should never hurt the sleeve o rings, I have played like you say with o-rings and different lubes, heck even my rubber wedding ring, some stuff will make them swell to 3 or 4 times their normal size and some will just turn them to slime!

Obviously there are different kinds of orings, and I’m just talking tractor sleeve orings cause if you think about it those orings are getting oil from the crankcase on the bottom of them anyway. Somewhere along the line it got drilled into a lot of peoples heads and what I quoted was straight from an IH service manual

Sure funny nobody ever mentions brake fluid. ??? I have used it a few times.
