M electrical system

On Our 6 volt postive ground system if you leave the battery hooked up it will kill the battery. Take the battery and recharge it, use the tractor, stop, start it repeatedly and the system keeps the battery charged as long as you unhook the cables overnight. When you hook up the cable you do get a slight spark but amp gauge shows slight discharge when you turn on switch and shows charge which goes to 0 after it runs awhile. The tractor has a new switch and doesn't have the lights hooked up. All wires are new, does anyone have any ideas...or have had a similar experience?

see if cut out relay points are stuck in closed position. good luck, d.coleman

Jay,

Does your M have the orignal type cut out relay of has someone installed a voltage regulator?
The cut out relay is controled by the operator, either high or low charge.

Disconnect one of the battery terminals, and insert a 6 volt lamp between the cable end and the battery post. If there is a current draw, the lamp will glow. Now you can disconnect one wire at a time, and when the lamp goes out, you have found the source of the draw. I also have a small buzzer from Radio Shack that I use for this. Very handy.

If when you shut it down if you loosen the belt and the genny spins the cutout relay is sticking closed. HOWEVER if thats the case the battery would run down very fast, the ammeter will show heavy discharge, and the genny will get hot. Yours sounds more like a higher resistance minor short which Franks method should help you locate.

I have the same problem with my 51 M. i just unhook the battery
after i'm done using for now but after it warms up i hope to track
the problem down.
The only thing i haven't replaced is the cut out relay, does anyone
know where to get an original looking replacement, or can they be
fixed?

Finally got to work on the M... what a mess. Wires hooked up every which way... rewired it per manual, opened cut-out cleaned and reset it and replaced switch with new one. She is now working like a charm. Thanks for all the replies and help. I'm working on rigging up a 495A planter unit to use behind this tractor, hopefully I'll be ready for March corn planting.
