I bought this old gal on a retirement auction yesterday.

Since it was a nice afternoon and only 19 miles from home, I put 5 gallons of gas in it and just headed down the road across country. It had about an inch of gas in the tank.

I came across some hilly country, and on the level and going down hill, it would have a fluttery, stuttery sound to it, but as soon as it started to pull up a grade or a good hill, it would smooth out and run like one would expect. I also got a good whiff of stinky, stale gasoline frequently along the way. Am I correct in assuming the first place to start would be to boil the carb and put a kit in it? Or does someone have a different idea?

The good news is, the oil pressure stayed up, the temperature stayed down, no smoke from the exhaust, and the gears were quiet.

BTW, there was an H Farmall and a B John Deere also on the auction, both also with recent paint. I paid $1800 for the M, and some lady paid the same for the B. I might have bought the H also, but I was a bit scared of it. The rear tires were kaput, the drawbar was bent, (how do you bend a drawbar?), and after it ran it spit a bunch of coolant onto the front tires. It only brought about $800.

I'll be the third to "second" that! Just get some GOOD gas in it, and put it to work, or at least let it sit there and run for an hour or something...

That was what happened with my Super C. Brought it home, and it ran, but not that great, fired it up one day while I was in the shop (it was out front) and just let it run at 3/4 for an hour. MAN! That cleaned things up GREAT! :)

Thanks for the responses!

I shoulda mentioned, the power jet on the carb will respond to adjustment, the idle jet won't.

I may take Allen's advise and start by draining the tank and putting all fresh gasoline in it. It must have sat for a while from the smell of the gas.

Well there's one way to bend a drawbar is with those old type stack movers, but a H is way to small for that job, but there were two guys here moved, a lot of em with a M and a Super MTA.

Looks like a very nice original M that hasn't been all messed up with trying to make it something it isn't. from your description of your trip home just get all the remaining fuel out of the tank as best you can and clean the screens at the sediment bowl and the carb inlet and fill with some fresh clean fuel and wind it up. It will probably clean right up and maybe put some Sea Form in the fuel for a little help. Unless you have some reliable service information about the tractor I would suggest changing out all the existing fluids with new so you will know it's baseline for future servicing. If you don't have one already you will find an Operator's Manual your best friend and will answer most everything about how and when to perform the various service requirements for the tractor. Sounds and looks like you will have a nice tractor for whatever you envision and need it to work with. Nice purchase and enjoy your new tractor, Hal.

I third or fourth that vote. Just run it. Put about half a bottle of Seafoam in it and work it. When I have the gas barrel filled I put Seafoam in the whole barrel. Costs a penny or two but all of the little engines and old cars give me much less trouble.

I checked all the fluids before I headed down the road and changing them will be high on the agenda.

As I said before, I'll start with emptying the fuel tank, cleaning the filters, and put fresh gas in it. The fact that it ran fine while pulling would indicate no restriction in the fuel system.

Congratulations on your purchase, it looks pretty nice. I had an H doing the same thing. Sounded good under a load, but sputtered when not. I took it to a real mechanic after messing aroung with it myself for a month. He replaced the bushings on the distributor and the problem was solved.
