I bought this old gal on a retirement auction yesterday.
Since it was a nice afternoon and only 19 miles from home, I put 5 gallons of gas in it and just headed down the road across country. It had about an inch of gas in the tank.
I came across some hilly country, and on the level and going down hill, it would have a fluttery, stuttery sound to it, but as soon as it started to pull up a grade or a good hill, it would smooth out and run like one would expect. I also got a good whiff of stinky, stale gasoline frequently along the way. Am I correct in assuming the first place to start would be to boil the carb and put a kit in it? Or does someone have a different idea?
The good news is, the oil pressure stayed up, the temperature stayed down, no smoke from the exhaust, and the gears were quiet.
BTW, there was an H Farmall and a B John Deere also on the auction, both also with recent paint. I paid $1800 for the M, and some lady paid the same for the B. I might have bought the H also, but I was a bit scared of it. The rear tires were kaput, the drawbar was bent, (how do you bend a drawbar?), and after it ran it spit a bunch of coolant onto the front tires. It only brought about $800.
