m front cover

happy new year everybody we are trying to put live hydr on an m and was wondering if a sm cover will fit on a straight m block? because the top holes are off on the pump

I have a 400 with an M motor in it. You can make the pump work with a little time and ingenuity. Mine is temporary so I didn't want to change the front plate. I drilled the pump holes out as big as I could and installed a nut on the other side to pull it together. I am sure it could be done better and more permanent with more time. I reinstalled the power steering also. The hyd pump was the only major issue. My 2 cents. Lee

Nope, the 45 will need the heavier gear. I think that mid to late 50 is when the front cover and gear were upgraded. M's after 228082 will accept pump as is. Any older need the front cover and gear change.

I have read in the archives that it will.

If you use the cover from a Super remember to use the backing plate for it as well so everything matches.

While the cover is off replace the cam gear with a heavier one made for the Super M.

Or you could put two low grade bolts in the holes that are the problem. Tightem then down and saw/grind them off so they are flush with the surface.

Then install the Super M pump with the two lower bolts, and mark where the new holes need to be drilled.

Remove the pump, center punch where you need to drill the new holes.

Don't drill too deep, you don't want to drill through the front cover.

Tap them out and re-install the Super M pump.

Don't know for sure, but from what I have read the standard M gear will not last or hold up too long.

I have a complete setup with front cover, back plate, pump, and heavy cam gear for doing this.

We plan to install it on my uncles tractor, but have never gotten around to doing it yet.

Don't forget to pick up the companion backing plate if you get a SM cover. It's a stamped metal plate that is between the cover and the block front, it has the matching holes for the SM cover.
