Wondering what are the pros and cons of each chasis, Farmall M and Super M for building a puller? Weight, gear speeds? Anything else? Thanks.

The chassis is the same. The m has a 247.7 cubic inch engine. The super m has a 264 cubic inch engine. The 264 engine will take the pistons and sleeves of a 450 making it a 281 cubic inch. The super m has a larger clutch.

Neither one is meadow green is the first problem, haha!! couldn't resist. Both are good pullers, the super is a little easier for cheaper power, I think the M can get a little lighter. Is this for stock pulling or should I say 3mph class antique Div I, II, or open class where you need 400-500ci. to unload off the trailer. Good Luck will be fun with which ever you choose!

For pulling there's not too much difference...the first gear is the same speed in either model. Like a previous poster said the Super M came with an engine block able to take the largest sleeves used in this engine family, the 4 1/8 in. bore jobs that the later 450 models came with. Also the Super M used a 12 inch clutch...which was stronger naturally, but made it necessary to split the tractor to change it, whereas the M with it's 11 inch clutch didn't have to be split. For field work the extra power of the Super M made it a true 3-4 plow tractor and the faster 3rd and 4th gears gave it a better range of field speeds and might be an advantage for pulling in the classes that permit higher track speeds. As I recall the clutch pilot bearing and the input shaft pilot bearing are larger in the Super M too...which might mean something too. for transmission durability.

I'd think you'd be looking to spend some extra $$ to get a SM - at least around here you would. Balance and power potential are pretty well identical in the stock to semimodified classes. I prefer straight M's for their band brakes - not nearly as cantankerous as them disk brakes on the supers.
