M5 Colour Scheme

Hi all , after viewing the Photo Gallery on this site, I see all of the M5 are 2 tone, that being a bronze engine and praire gold body . My 1962 diesel M5 is all gold ( body and engine )-- it must be an after market paint job ?

I believe the 1960 M5's maybe early 61 models were Metallic Bronze on the chassis and gold on the hood, rims and fenders. Then they went to Dyna Brown and energy yellow (same set up). If this isnt correct someone correct me.... MM's were all yellow in 1967.

First M5"s were bronze metallic and Praise Gold #3, then came dyna Brown and PG3, and a few of the last ones were dyna Brown and yellow. Don"t know exactly when all these changes took place though.

My 63 M5 diesel is Energy yellow with Dana brown on it. The black strip down the side is to be reflective as well. I haven't found any of that tape /decal yet.

Doug what you refer as PG #3 was "Power Yellow" MM's name for it when introduced mid-production 335, 445, 5-Star etc. Early M5's were Bronze Belly, Later Dyna Brown. I've Never seen an Energy Yellow M5, that was supposed to start with the M6 models, but as with most things MM, never say never or always.

Generally speaking MM Tractors were all Prairie Gold prior to the M5 and again 1967 & later, were All Yellow replacing the "Brown Belly" All Production G1000 Vista's were All yellow, where as Row-crop, Wheatland, and smaller models had Brown belly before the paint change.

I was under the same impression until I started peeling the old black strip off the side and and found the energy yellow there and on some of the other parts that where protected from the weather and such. Do you think this is one of those "hey lets see just how this looks paint jobs form the factory" I am pretty certain this is an original paint tractor I have here. What do you think?

Kevin, That would not surprise me. Is the Ser. No. late in the run? AS you state peeling the stripe back to reveal a protected area, is a pretty convincing "proof". that "Scotchlite" stripe interest me. They were uses on Many MM Tractor, but not all. My A4T-1600 Had it, my G1000 Wheatland did Not, but I've observed others that were opposite. Use of Scotchlight (a 3M (Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing at the time)goes back to the Early 1950's (by MM) that I've found so far, developed in cooperation for the Northern Pacific Railway. NP a St. Paul Based Company worked close with MM on some projects, so not surprising, "scotchlite" decals show up early in MM parts manuals, usually just a short stripe on rear of Implement. also the MM on back of Seats was sometimes reflectorized material. ~ Marty

That is 17202557 99th from the end of the run. The tape is pretty brittle so that too makes me think it came that way from the factory. It will go back the way I got it anyway.

I could be wrong but I suspect if the last M-5 s were changed it was right after White took over. I remember right after their take over they changed the M-5 model to M-602 changed the paint to a lighter color and raised the price $400
