M5 vs. 88

Hi guys , I'm undecided what to set up for pulling since I haven't pulled either tractor . I have an M5 diesel and a Super 88 diesel. The olie weighs 5500 lbs all stock and not sure about the M5 all stock. What one would you set up for serious pulling ? they would be in the Farm stock class

You get a definite weight advantage with the 88 and a huge power advantage with the M5. The M5 with 3pt removed would be about 6500#. The M5 could be 5500#, but would require light wheels, hubs, narrow front, no 3pt assy, etc.

Ya, from what I observed over the years , pound per pound is that the 4 cyl develop more lugging power that the 6 cyl ---it must be the long stroke and a good example is the w9 --do they ever pull good loaded down heavy So you are probably right about using the M5 and taking off all the extra weight.

An M5 would be my choice too. Do some digging on this website you'll find instructions on how to turn the fuel up and adjust the governor for more rpm if you're allowed to. Each of those is a 2 minute adjustment.....just fyi..and if you find that M5 isn't "serious" enough, you can get big cubes out of it, or better yet, put it back together and sell it off to buy a Moline with spark plugs.....

Do your local pulls allow 1960-newer tractors such as M5s? If so both are good options, as mentioned it depends on whether you want to pull 4500-6500 or 6500-8500.

MM Diesel guy has a good idea. You will never get the power out of EITHER tractors in the diesel form. Especially the MM. Its kind of a turd for the cubes. Even at 354, you have to keep them at a higher RPM to make much. The heads are expensive, the overbore pistons are hard to find. Save yourself the effort and $!

A tuned up compressed 403 will walk the dog over a max effort MM diesel

I've been wrong before, but with the same bore, and stroke, and without a turbo, do you think you can make more power with a diesel than a gas? I would think not.

My .060 over 403 with LP manifolds, M670 venturi, warmed up cam, and cheap 10A4210 heads makes 98hp on the dyno at mild rpms. Hey, it was cheap. It's beat a ton of well built strokers.

This U with a worn out 403 with original pistons is doing very well in the 3 & 3 1/2 mph classes against all the power block and stroked JD Gs. Pulls 4500- 8000#. 1 st gear still bumping the governor at the end.

Naturally aspirated, same bore and stroke, gas wins, especially Moline. Indirect injection is hard to get good power out of. If I could do it over, I'd have spark plugs....

Left off the picture, worn out 403 with 4206 heads. Suppose to be 10:85 :1 compression. Great first gear puller.

That's a good looking puller. Here's ours. We used to run 3rd gear with 15.5 tires but not with these 16.9. 2nd is plenty. We still beat a few 140hp Farmalls.

I think Dan's is 605 crank and 504 blocks. Just a guess. And then some work beyond that. It runs gooooood. I wouldn't mind using a good G crank. But I guess in the four cylinders they tend to break.

Got 18 hooks on a 4 cyl diesel 425 cubes, using a G crank, no problems yet. I was competitive last year in 4+5mph 5500 thru 7000, running 2100-2600 rpm. Its a new setup for me so I'm still tweaking....

super 88 diesel will run good with no work what so ever in 4500-6000 class
