What are magneto points made out of? Are they just steel?

Various materials. Some cheap sets are steel. Most are tungsten alloy or other higher temp iron based compounds. They are not impossibly hard, but often much harder than common mild steel. Resistance to oxidation and metal transfer are important. JimN

Some kind of steel I think underneath at least, butttttttt its that shiny silvery low resistance coating thats critical cuz once its burned off and carbon develops, they burn n become resistive n there goes your spark grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Using the correct sized condensor is what reallyyyyyyyyy saves points from premature burn up

Ive seen mag points that develop a gray oxide coating just from sitting to where the mag dont fire at all, but run a dollar bill etc between them to polish them up n youre good to go

Wheres a good metallurgist when we need him lol

Thanks Jim, I have a hot discussion goin on another board concerning coils and so called hot mag coils n all other sorts of techy fun stuff with a Nuclear Physicist buddy if youre into Wico Mags butttttttt they arent used on those darn farmalls lol

I have a Bosch Mag that is mostly complete, it needs new points so I thought I could make them. Any suggestions on what to do?

If that mag cannot be fixed because there are absolutely no new points for it, build a new set from the tips of a different set. Silver soldering, and tiny metal work are required, but it will work. JimN
