Friend has magneto off M. Ran ok parked it then went back and it doesn’t have fire want start. We put coil, points and condenser and still no fire. It’s on work bench. Anyone know what may be problem. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Anything happen to the little insulator where the kill switch goes through the case and is your impulse coupling working OK. Also there is a coil that could be bad. You also mention you changed the condenser - lots of them are bad out of the box these days. I'd try putting the old one back in for at least trouble shooting purposes.

Brand new points? They will have a film on them you will need to clean them, vigorously! How are you testing for spark? We use a cordless impact and socket to spin the mag..... sometimes you need a little speed, not just a hand turn....

With it in the vice, clamp a pair of vice grips on one of the drive tangs, and coil cap removed and a wire grounded to the vice and held close to the point on top of the coil with insulated pliers but not touching the point and turn the magneto in the direction with impulse and when it snaps you should see a spark jump to the wire, if no spark you need to find out why. As suggested above clean points? Condenser? Insulator? Wire from insulator to the points good,no bare spots? Coil?

In addition to testing everything for shorts. You can test the coil which can be replaced if necessary. It's not 100% but a good test for a problem mag.

Re: H4 magneto coil testing? in reply to Matt, 12-04-2002 10:01:49

Matt -
Primary to ground: 0.5 to 0.8 ohms.
Secondary to ground: 6,200 ohms

Resistance also varies somewhat with temperature.

with out seeing it , the coil was replace , that was because it testing bad . So suggest the coil contact needs to be rotated 15 degrees to contact cap and the coil contact. You can check this . check the strap to coil ground is make contact with VOM m eter to be sure .
The check condenser insulation is not defective.
The cotton insulated , frayed wire the goes to the points must not be grounded .
I have had a bad distribution cap that had me causing issues.
It also put a spark tester on plug 1 and the 2,3,4 to see ,it should jump a gap of 3/4 inch .
The impulse is clicking ?
I disconnect the ground wire to switch troubleshooting till you up and running .

Using impact I’ve got fire. I’ve always had fire by turning it by hand????Thanks
