Bought a 45" Allis-C. Started tinkering w/it yesterday (it"s got electric start)...initially, I had no spark....took cap off mag, filed rotor tip & cap stabs, put it back together & I got a weak spark....today, no spark. I haven"t fiddled much w/ magnetos. How do I go about finding out if I"ve got a good mag? Can I test it w/ the cap off by spinning the motor there-by being sure the problem is the cap/rotor? Thanks for help.

The way I test my mags, is to put mag in vise, take one wire put in mag and spark plug. Then I do this on a metal table that is grounded good to the vise, take a pair of visegrips, grip spark plug to table, the snap impulse and see if I have spark. Then check each hole. If I don't have spark, you can try cleaning points, then if I still don't have spark, she goes to the mag man.
