Magneto

I recently finished a restoration on a 1946 Farmall B. Everything is great with the exception of the MAG. During restoration the gears in the MAG fell out an I am sure I did not put them back in the origianl position. When starting the tractor I encountered difficulty. I am sure it is related to timing and the MAG. I did rotate the MAG and had better success but the tractor just does not run right and is very difficult to start. Is there any way I can reposition the two gears in the MAG properly if I remove it and start over? I never ran into this problem before, but then I never dropped the gears out of the MAG before now. I am very sure this is the issue and just need some help and advice on how to reposition the gears properly in the MAG. Thanks for the assistance!

Are the two gears you refer to the ones under the rotor? If so, I've done the same thing. I got mine back by taking out all the spark plugs, turn the engine over until #1 cylinder is at top dead center, then set the mag so that the rotor points to the #1 cylinder contact, with the impulse just ready to trip.

It may take a little trial and error to get it right, but it shouldn't be too hard.

This gears are marked for position. I did the same but the magman straighted me out. T nuff said Henry

If you have the H4 magneto and need the small rotor drive gears timed, here is how. If you look closely at the larger gear, it will have a "R" and a "L" stamped in it, the small gear has a flat spot on the teeth, line up the flat tooth with the "R" on the large gear. I had this problem on my H when I was putting it together, so I emailed MAGMAN and he told me how to do it.
