Main drive bevel pinion replacement

I am replacing the main drive bevel pinion, and transmission-to-pinion coupling on my 9N. The tractor is split. The hydraulic pump, cylinder and forks are removed. The six (6) screws securing the bearing retainer are removed. I have screwed a threaded rod into the front end of the pinion gear in order to pull the whole assembly out. This rod protrudes through a 4x4 wood block which spans the open end of the housing. I am tightening a nut against the wood block really, really hard . . . . as hard as I can turn a 12" long wrench. Nothing is moving. I am afraid pulling any harder will break something which I don't want to break. Am I missing something? Any advice?

I am happy to report success in removal of the pinion gear. I obtained heavy duty threaded rod, nuts, and washers from my friends at the power company. I felt more confident wrenching on these. A short extension on the 12" wrench and it popped free. Now all I have to do is remember how the whole thing goes back together. Thanks for posting responses.
