making a bed shaper

I want to hill up some worked ground (plowed and disced) with two shovels to make 3ft wide beds on 4 ft center. I then will roll the beds with a spool type shaper. I"ve got most of it figured out but should I use disc hillers, shovels, big furrowers, or lister type implements for the first pass?

we usesta make beds like that for vine crops...used a 2 bottom dearborn turning plow after discing ground clean...then leveled top with a grab hook [bent pitchfork lookin thing]that was back when my name was Manual ;)

My dad and grandfather use to hill asparagus years ago and they used a homemade hiller.

They laid a 2 x 12 x 6ft long on its edge and then bolted another 4.5ft long one on its edge on top of the 6ft long one. Both boards were flush at one end and this was the front. They bolted two more boards together in the same way for the other side/half of the hiller. Each pair of boards were the sides of the hiller and now they bolted the sides together with a flat bar across the top and bent down about 8 inches on each side. Now the sides were about 4 or 5ft apart at the front but the rear was only about 2ft apart max.

A top view of this implement would of looked like the letter "V". It was pulled with a chain hooked to each side on the front. It worked very well. The top boards being shorter than the bottom boards kept it from choking up. They used to pull it with horses then with a Farmall "A" tractor.
I hope this all makes sense!

I built one last year similar to this companies. I used 4 disk hillers with a shaping pan on the back. This site should give you some ideas.

We use to pull out beds with lister bottoms on tool bar with markers. Then prewatered, then ran rolling cultivator or rod weeder with water furrowers in front the the row planter units on a HD tool bar with rolling bed shaper. Now everyone uses more all in one rigs for minimum or not till to use less fuel, less trips. Check these for disk listers and bed shapers. rollacone.com and bighambrothers.com
