MAPP gas thru a propane torch?

I have two propane torch heads which are at least 25 years old. To get more heat, I got a canister of MAPP gas. The torch lit per usual, and after a minute or so, the flame diminished to almost nothing. Thinking something was clogged, I disassembled the torch tube and nozzle, and found no problem - but it won't pass MAPP gas, nor will it now pass propane.

Then i took the second torch head - same result.

Is there something about MAPP gas which plugs/shuts down/ or stops the gas flow?

Hi greygoat,

I think you're thinking of the different tips/orifices you need for acetylene or for other gases in oxy/fuel cutting and heating. Propane, MAPP, and several other proprietary gases all work with the same tip, but it's different than the tip for acetylene.

The inexpensive torches that screw onto disposable propane canisters are supposed to work with the same style of MAPP canisters. On the other hand, I've also had trouble with that kind of torch and MAPP gas which was attributed to a bad lot of the gas canisters. In any case, I've never seen separate torches for MAPP for sale at home improvement stores.

All the best, Stan

My TS 4000 works just fine with MAPP and is supposed to work with propane also.

One of the handiest tools I have with the push button start. Lights fireworks such as the artillery shells(without getting real close), punks, etc, charcoal, the grill, firewood, solder copper, the furnace, hot water heater, or just to put some heat on something. No messing with strikers and the wind don't blow it out. It will reach into a furnace when you can't see where the pilot is and not have to wait long to get the thermocouple hot.

You are supposed to use what is called a "Turbo-Torch" for MAPP gas, you cannot use a propane torch head. I use a Bernzomatic self igniting torched head that came with MAPP bottles and have used it with propane and had no problems. Going the other way will not work. Propane only torch head will not work for MAPP gas.
