Massey 1135 Ether

It's getting cold here. If the weatherman has any idea what he's talking about, it's going to be in the 20's tonight. Going to need that shotof ether to get up and running.

My question is, where is the ether bottle on a Massey 1135? Or where should it be? I've looked all over the tractor and haven't found a bottle.

Next question is, will any ether bottle work or is it one of those special Massey deals?

If you have a ether system it should be in the intake manifold. Those systems usually need a special cylinder like a small propane cylinder. Actually they have the same thread. These cylinders are a little pricey. I think there are systems that use the spray cans but I've never seen one. My Cat has an ether system that even has a temperature sensor by the water pump so it won't work if the engine is warm. It also only lets a measured amount of ether in. You can use the hand spray cans in the air filter intake though. Just use sparingly. Dave

The either can on our 1130 was just behind the front grill. It has a small tube that runs into the front of the intake manifold on the right side. Ours was designed for a short can and came from Massey that way.

I know it is set up for ether, the ether button is right above the key switch. Just had no idea where they hid the can.

I'm going to plug the block heater in when I get up in the morning, hopefully that will be enough to get it started until I can get a can of ether

I've never seen an 11xx Massey ever need a shot of either if the block heater is plugged in.

I would plug the block heater up tonight and try to start the tractor without using the ether if i could.I know the ether setup is on the tractor to use but,i've seen several engines damaged by too much ether.If i had to use it i would do so sparingly.

Only experience I have with tractors set up for either are IH and Case IH's, none of them are ours. We rent a 986 from time to time that has an either setup, it's a regular small spray can that is right on the manifold. A button inside the cab.

Never seen anything but the small cans on the intakes, never like the cylinder setup you mentioned. But there's lots of things I haven't seen....

Both my 1135 & 1105 had a can in tront of the radiator, hooked to a tiny 1/16" tube & selinoid.
That system didnt work very well so i removed the plug on the front of the intake manifold on both and replaced them with 1/2" valves, now i can just flip open the valve & squirt a quick blast of either into the manifold. No more problems cranking even with half dead batteries.

I have always worried that the valve would stick open, ruining the engine! So even though my 1150 and 2805 have the factory ether setup, I've never used it, and really never needed it with the block heater.

The block heater worked excellent. The tractor fired right up this morning and had heat in the cab after just a few minutes.

It looks as though someone removed the ether solinoid and put a plug in the manifold.

I guess as long as the block heater is going to do the trick, I'll just forget about getting the ether hooked back up.

I'm on top of a mountain in upstate NY, it's not uncommon to get below zero windchills in the winter. Hopefully the block heater will be enough

I WOULD NEVER CHOOSE EITHER OVER A BLOCK HEATER FIRST OF ALL ENGINES THAT YOU USE EITHER ON A LOT BECOME DEPENDANT UPON IT I KNOW IT SOUNDS FUNNY BUT ITS TRUE IT STARTS TO BREAK DOWN THE RINGS THEN YOU HAVE LESS COMPRESSION THEN MORE EITHER NEEDED THEN MORE RING DAMAGE THEN EVEN MORE EITHER IT IS A NEVER ENDING CYCLE TILL EVENTUALLY THE ENGINE NEEDS REBUILT ALSO JUST FOR FYI ACTUAL AIR TEMP IS ALL THAT MATTERS A MACHINE DOES NOT SENSE WIND CHILL AT. ALL ONLY HUMANS AND ANIMALS WIND CHILL IS HOW IT FEELS ON FLESH AND THAT IS BECAUSE OF HEAT LOSS EVAPORATION ETC. MACHINES DONT NOTICE WIND CHILL!
