massey 65 alternator problem

Just bought a massey 65 diesel with a WPS brand 12 volt alternator on it. It doesn"t charge the battery. Had the alternator checked and it works fine. I think its wired wrong. The big red wire on the back post goes directly to the battery. There are two wires on the plastic prong connector - one goes to the Amp. gauge and the other goes to the starter solenoid. Any help would be appreciated.

Possibly a bad amp gauge. Some systems use the amp gauge to complete the charging circuit. On my Cat I had a weird problem and the easiest fix was to run a new wire from the alternator to the amp gauge. There appeared to be a short somewhere in the old wire or wiring harness. Ran a new 10g wire and problem solved. Dave

Do you have a multimeter? When you start the tractor, you should be able to measure 12V in both the big prong going to battery, and on the "f" terminal. The f terminal is used for waking up the alternator, and if there is no voltage to that terminal, it may not be able to start charging. The wire going to the starter solenoid is propably a sense wire to compensate for cable losses.

A picture of what you have would be helpful. It sounds like you have a Delco alternator. The large red wire on the single stud on the back should go to the amp guage and the from the guage to the battery. The larger of the two wires in the plug in I think goes to the ignition and the other goes to your charge light and then ignition run. I could have that backwards but you can probably find a diagram somewhere.
