Massey Ferguson 40 Information

I am looking at a Massey Ferguseon 40 with a diesel engine. I am familiar with tractors in general but unfamiliar with this model couldn"t find it shown in the serial number list. It is not a Fergueson 40 or Massey Harris 50. Appears to be an industrial with yellow paint with heavy casting around the radiator. Guess the year to be 60"s or newer with flat top fenders. Any idea on years made along with parts interchangabilty with other models (i.e. 135 or others etc). Is there any issues to look for with this model.

My thanks in advance,

Jerry

I would hazard a guess, and say this little beauty will have a three cyl. Perkins engine, either D3-152 or AD3-152 engine. The only other difference with the industrial 40's, was that some had "dry" disc brakes, while the later models had "wet" discs. These were definitely the pick of them, as the dry brake back ends were fitted with lighter hubs, and had "issues" with the brakes. The wet brakes usually out-lasted the tractors. The earlier model to this tractor, was the 203.
This machine will either be fitted with a single or dual clutch, 6 speed box, or a forward-reverse "shuttle" transmission. The latter was difficult to run a slasher (brush-hog) on, as the PTO speed was determined by the "ground speed" of the tractor in drive.
Parts are not a problem as a rule, as many of the agricultural models used the same "running gear" as this tractor, 135's, etc.
My bit,
regards, Evan.

An MF40 industrial is a very good tractor with a "hard nose" around the radiator. They were made from about 1968 till 1975 or somewhere there abouts. A 40B was made after this but was a bigger tractor. A 30B was more of a newer version of the 40. The 40 used to be smaller than a 30 but with the B models they reversed that. The power train is basically the same as a 135 with a Perkins AD3-152 diesel or AG3-152 gas engine. Excellent engines! The transmission is different however. It was either a manual shuttle or instant reverse. A loader and/or backhoe were also available for them. Look in the archives on this forum and also in photo's. Dave

I think these machines were also designated MF 2203 or 2205, depending on the transmission, manual or shuttle. I have an operator's manual for one and everything in it corresponds with my MF 40 (which has loader and backhoe). It's a robust machine. Parts are mostly interchangeable with the MF 135 although I think the back axle is from the 165 as most 135s have drum brakes. Front axle is heavier too and it has power steering.

Hi,

My first post here. I'm having a mid-life crisis, which so far includes buying a small patch of land, and last week not one but two MF tractors cast off by the local water district. One is a 1974 MF40 with backhoe, the one I really wanted, and the second a 1959 202 Workbull (I think) for an extra $1,200. Both run, the 40 is diesel and the 202 gas. I still have to pick up the 202 but I've got the 40 home and pushed a little dirt around. First time on a tractor and I feel like a 5 year old kid, what a blast.

Anyway, the brakes on the 40 lock up, not really sure yet the exact symptoms yet since I've only been on it a few minutes, apparently it's a common issue. It has not been used in a few years. Don't know if they are the 'wet' or 'dry' brakes. Might it clear up on it's own with use or should I go ahead and pull the wheels off? I'm a decent mechanic and machinist but no tractor experience.

I'm sure I'll have many more questions, hope I'm in the right spot and thanks for listening. Here is a link to pictures, I'm too new to allow posting them

You should post this as a new post so it comes up at the top of the front page rather than way back where no one would ever see it. Dave

I have an MF40 that I have used for years. It has been a really good workhorse around my farm. but it now needs a lot of work to get it working again. I am looking at buying a 202 to replace it. Since you own both, does it look like the front loader and backhoe from the 40, fit on the 202.

The loaders look identical. The back end I'm not so sure about. The loader on my 202 is a Davis 102, the loader on the 40 is an MF32, the backhoe MF52. Hope this helps. I'll take a good look at the backs of both on Sunday when I get out to them.
