I am looking at a 65 mf diesel.Are there any common problems to look for? Are these perkins prone to have the sleeves come loose to ride up and down in the block? Are the 65's goood tractors. I'm use to ford and allis kinda new to mf.

Some of the diesel models with the later 203 Perkins did have head gasket problems. Not really any problems with liners, although if the liners have no protrusion above the engine block, they can become "loose", and start hammering. This, in time cracks the lip from the liner. This problem usually follows the head gasket issues, i previously mentioned.
As in the posting above, check the operation of the brakes, as this was one area that gave grief.
The clutch, 6 speed transmission and hydraulics were fairly bullet-proof. If the tractor has a Multi-Power transmission, check that there is no transmission oil dripping from the cotter pin fitted to the front under-side of the transmission case. If fitted with power steering, see if it is fully functional once the tractor is warmed up. Loss of oil pressure, due to a worn P.S. pump could be the cause once hot. Others here may be able to give you some more tips,

I don't consider myself an expert, but I have three Fords, an 8N, a 640 and an 860. I also have a MF 65 Diesel and a MF 283, which is also a Perkins diesel. The Masseys are absolutely the most reliable of the bunch. All three Fords are in my shop in various states of disrepair. The 8N oil pump lost its prime from sitting too long, and all three carburetors flood into the air intake. The Masseys just keep working. Good luck, whatever you decide.

The 65 is an excellent tractor, and the 192 or 203 from Perkins are wonderful engines with a lot of torque, 5 inch stroke, and fuel is not one of it's favorites, so no worries there. You will be surprised of how much work it will do on a fuel tank.
Just touch the engine, especially the head around the exhaust manifold before it is started, so you know it starts from cold when you get there to look at it. This will tell you about the condition of the engine. They get worn too after a long life.
Mine is a trouble to start, but once it is started and gotten hot and I have run it on good speed a little it does not smoke much... almost nothing.
Very fine little tractor. Actually it is large for me.

Also check the rear axle bearings as they are a bit of a hazzle to repair.
