Hi every one I have a massey ferguson unknow size and year. The guy i got it from said the year was some where around 46 to a 55 not sure. The trans` shifting pattern has a S gear would some one know what this is for?. I put it in the S gear and the tractor dose nothing Thanks

From what little I know of Fergies, I think that is the position you put it in to start, IF the safty start hasn't been disabled.

It is the start position but i think if its diesel there is another button/lever to be pressed at the same time. On a petrol version the tractor should turn over when the gear lever is put into this position.

Post your query in the Harry Ferguson forum as the guys there would maybe be a bit more up to speed on your tractor rather than us Ford guys.

AS others said, the S is for start. It was Ferguson's way of making sure the trans was in neutral before cranking the engine. Of course the plan only works if someone hasn't bypassed the safety starter system.

You probably have either a TO-20 or TO-30. I'm not sure if the trans shifter start system was still in use by the time the TO-35 was produced. The guys on the Harry Ferguson board will know.
