massey pony steering

Do you need the whole box or is it just the pin that rides in the worm on the steering shaft? I have a 1955 Pacer that had problems (1/2 turn of steering play) & just got it fixed. Bought a length of 5/8" Stress Proof steel rod (a hardening steel). Cut 4 pieces (about 3",just a nice size to work with) & had a buddy turn down one end on each to 7/16" dia. X 1/2" long. Then cut the 5/8" section to 3/4" long. Chucked small end in a 1/2" drill & shaped it on a grinder to match a wooden pattern I had made that fit the worm. Took the new pins to a machine shop & they hardened them for me - can't cut them with a file now. Time will tell if they will last (Son-in-law is using it to plow snow), but I have 3 more to wear out. Worm is cast iron & fairly rough. A local tractor salvage yard wanted $125 for a used box - when all I needed was the pin. That little Ross steering box is light duty & doomed to wear out. Larger Ross boxes have a Y-shaped arm on the end of the Pitman arm with 2 hardened pins to run in the worm.

Cover on mine was broken into 3 pieces & brazed back together when I bought the tractor. Was OK but a nice old fella gave me a good cover & I replaced it when I repaired the box & packed it full of grease. Are you in the States or Canada? I seem to see more of these little tractors in Canada as they were built in Toronto. Not a lot of action related to Ponies & Pacers on this forum.
