MD engine parts help.

I have another MD problem that I hope someone can help me with.

I have been in the process of restoring our 1951 MD for several years. I ordered the engine overhaul parts from a supplier that handled Power Max (which is now Reliance) back in 2014.

Due to the head cracking again where a previous repair had ended, it was leaking for a while not noticeable till the last time I went to run it. It has badly pitted #’s 2 & 3 sleeves. The supplier where I had gotten them from previously stated he cannot locate them anywhere.

This is a 3 7/8” to 4” conversion with the smaller top lip, I-H P/N 306 039 R1. I was informed to check with Justin Weber which I did, and he said he has not had any for several years.

Does anyone have any idea where I could source 2 of these sleeves or any suggestions on how to proceed? Since the overhaul it has maybe 3 hours on the clock which was not even under any load. As much as I have stuck into this dang thing, I sure don’t want to end up parting it out. Thanks.

Take a picture of these pits and post them. It isn't clear how long the coolant sat in the cylinders. Let's see how bad this really is

One of the main issues you are probably having when searching is the / and gap in your PN, search “IH 306039R1” If that is indeed the PN of the sleeve you need you have no worries about parting it out. You can be back in business for the additional low cost of $670.72 (335.36 x 2) 💸🤑
Messicks IH PN 306039R1
Hopefully that link takes you to the right page. I will do some more research and likely come back with a lower cost alternative.
Edit: This is true only if they actually have them in stock, I can add them to a cart and I can proceed to check out, of course that is as far as I went.

I am not finding any cheaper alternatives. Checking with Reliance directly might be an alternative. Not sure why your parts source wouldn’t tell you the truth other than now you’re having problems with the engine and maybe he doesn’t want to step into any possible liability on a small profit margin. (just my “might be” story) Some places want $900+ for one of those sleeves. It must be a currently available PN from CNHI, the problem I am finding with their latest parts site update is that you want to view a price you have to select a dealer. If that dealer doesn’t have that part in there inventory then it shows it as not available and you still can’t see the price, crappy idea if you ask me. Of course they are after real paying customers not somebody who is just looking for a price of a part for an out of date tractor. You could call a dealer and get a price, Messicks are essentially a dealer, so their price is probably the Fiat price.
Beyond that I would have given you the info on Carrs that McCormick 40 provided.

I would have to look but I think we would have a couple of the old 3-7/8 sleeves from when we did our MD last back in about 1973or 4 so they have been out laying on the shelf in the box since then .Can not say what condition they are in over all those years now.

He would have to install it and have somebody bore it to fit his over bore piston. And when looking for that sleeve I also ran across the fact that the sleeve numbers he is looking for takes different head gasket than a stock MD, I think it has to do with sleeve protrusions differences.

If you want to replace all the sleeves and pistons, I can provide provide a 4” TRW set, or a 3-7/8” IH set.

I want to thank all of you for the info you provided. I did place an order from Messick's, hopefully they are the correct ones, the P/N matches so it should be correct. If not, I will pursue some of your other contacts. Thanks again for all who responded. It is much appreciated.

Go to You Tube and look at Pete from Just A Few Acres Farm website. Bring up his restore videos of his M diesel tractor. He sometimes posts his suppliers of parts for the tractor. You might be able to contact him directly. Ellis
When I did my earlier search I looked at his video, he bought his parts from Bates. They list the sleeves but at a higher price than Messicks, $396.48.
