measuring vbetls..

how do you measure a v belt? The outside circumference is longer then the inside. Where does one measure it, take the average of the 2 or what? gramps have a device with 2 half pulleys on a slider, and u slide the pulleys apart and read the umber on the slider to get the size. I dont have one of these, need to see how stretched out my primary and secondary belts are on the JD 110. how far can they be stretched before they effect the clutch and variable speed operation?

I alway wait for them to start slipping then replace them. At the price of new ones I like to get as much mileage as I can.
I'm not real sure but I think that they are measured around the outside. Now with that said remember a 3/4 belt is only 11/16s wide like other things they are shrinking them. BUMMER

If you can't find a number on the belt measure around the out side and the width of the belt will get you what you need to get a new belt. At least that is what I have been told and it works for me. I do not know how your variable speed works so don't know about stretching.

well george, almost traded for a cub loboy 185 with a kwikway loade, but the cub need an entire new pto which runs over 300 used. the dude wqanted my blade, i told him i needed to kep it to sell to recoup the cost of the pto. well that broke the deal, what an idiot, he knew the blade didnt come with the tractor.
Oh well, its probly for the best, I think...
so the 300u is back on the bay. Gonna work on the jd, making a 1/2 ton lawn roller from an old headstock drum dad got from the quarry.
Also got a bit crazy nd went to the JD and kubota dealers. If I ever do buy new, it sure as heck wont be a JD and their crapppy black oxide cylinder shafts, freaken junk!!
Anyways... about measuring those belts...

Jay..it can get complicated... "fractional HP " belts are measured around the outside. "industrial" belts are measured by the pitch diameter, which is some where between the inside and out side. So Some stores carry both side by side. I have been known to go back as many as three time to get a right size one. Then there are automotive belts that have diferent widths and must be matched to the pulley.

Hang onto that 110, its a collector thing. Adjusting the variable pulleys is tough. Try to lub the sliding pulley.

Oh, the belts. I usually just run a string around the pulleys and measure it. Probably not the best patent, but works for me. You might want to add an inch or two to the string measurement.

To measure belts, we make a mark on the outside of the belt, the run a tape measure around the belt and that is the size we use. Now as for belt stretch, belts normally do not stretch, they appear to stretch because the sides wear on the belt, they ride down lower in the pulley, and give the illusion that the belts stretched.
