In your area what are scrappers paying for iron? There is a company near me that will bring a bin. I can fill it with any length iron, including complete motors, and they will pickit up for no charge. They will pay 180.00 for my iron per ton. For the labor of cutting, and cost of gas sounds good to me. What do you think? Stan

Can you trust them telling you what it weighed? Had a guy clean up my old family farm for 10%. He said he got 100 ton out of it. I have no Idea if that was correct or not. But it got cleaned up except one small wooden box. Went to clean it up and their was a big Bull Snake under it. I could see the guys foot prints leaving at a fast rate. LOL

A local scrapyard was caught last summer with having a scale set up to subtract 1000 lbs entering and add 1000 lbs leaving, giving the yard a "free" ton. This had been going on for many years, and it's a big yard. He made millions off of this, and it's only a misdemeanor, no jail time, and a few hundred dollars in fines.

I think these guys are ok. It is a family operation. They had a problem a while back taking cars with no title. I think they will try to keep everything honest. My Dad knew their dad for a lot of years. A sad note about the company. Around 25 years ago their dad was in the metal hopper doing something. One of the brothers dumped a load of iron him, killing him. Stan

The best thing to do is know what your tare weight is. I go to two different places. The tare is within 20 or 40 pounds depending on fuel tank level. I can judge fairly close by where the overload springs are either on or off of there perches.

I would be leery of a bin without seeing the scale ticket.

On the other hand, are the tricks the scrappies pull on the scrapyard.. Heard some guys bragging recently.. They buy buy up aluminum wheels, and take a load to the yard, and often the margin is only a few cents per lb, BUT, one big guy rides in behind the truck seat, and gets out and disappears, before they cross the scale on the way out.. so they get his weight X the price per lb... Some folks are born to scam......

Wheat farmer is right.
I got screwed by a scrapper many years ago when I was a maint. manager 10 years ago. I filled a dumpster up 1/2 way will old fixtures, metal desks, you name it. Had to be at least 3 tons in there. Never got a call back, they ripped me off.

Always take the crap there yourself and get a weigh in and take your money.

Be careful. What grade of scrap is the $180 for. What is the price if mixed?? The yard i go to has one price for iron, one for sheet metal, one for appliances and one for steel. Once they take the bin it is too late to argue price, you get what they want to give you, take it or leave it.

Yup, and a switch that bumped the scale 1K every time it was hit. I read that he fired a couple of employee's for ? and they ratted him out to the state. The state ripped out his scale. He had a new one operating 3 days later. That cost big $$$.

Around here that is call "Shread" If it is metal and not sorted. The price posted tonight on the highway sign was $180.00 per T.over their scales.
I sort the cooper and aluminum, the rest goes as shread.

If they'll pay you that much for 'iron' you better not waste any time taking their money. Depending on the market that may or may not be a good price for steel. In this area... it's a good price... but then again, in our area there's only one syndicate controlling the scrap metal business... so you basically take what they give you.

the price is the same here [$180 for long-mixed] Short is $235 .I have a local Yard near by & have a lot of Iron Going that way soon as the Corn is Done.Sick of trying to sell it ,Brother said might just as well Scrap the Stuff & just get it gone, instead of keep driving around it .Well get rich ??? = Well need some thing the day after it gone .But the $$$$ Sound's good we have about 100-150 tons that will be leaving.

I get your point - but technically... if they subtracted 1000 going in, and added 1000 coming out - they'd cancel each other out and the weight of the scrap would be accurate.

They'd have to do one or the other to throw off the weight of the scrap.

Sorry - it's early and I have nothing better to do with my time.
