Metal Prices

An Article in the Paper today tells of the serious problem of theft of"Whole Church Roofs etc." Seems the price of Lead has risen drastically and Thieves are stealing the Lead Roofing Material from Churches and other structures with out any one being the wiser. Paper quotes Scrap prices being paid of $3500.00 per ton.I know Copper theft here in the States is a problem, but Lead? Arizona has taken steps to curtail this low life venture of theft of Copper. What has your State done to deter it?

In Virginia, did not need to do anything. The crook tried to steal copper bars from the electric company, but did not realize they were live. They found him black handed, and black faced, and black legged.

It is a problem and here in WV they make you provide proof of identification so that if it turns up to be stolen, they can backtrack who turned it in. Not sure if it works, but it is a step in the right direction.

Recycle centers in Ca. now require a valid drivers license and registration of the vehicle used to transport the metal to the recycler before they pay out. The record goes to the State.
Last year on a construction site I was working on 2 employees of the Electrical contractor were recycling new rolls of wire to the tune of $20,000
of missing material. They finally found them out with this new system!

The price for lead shot for reloading has almost tripled. It is my understanding our military is contracting a new protective device to protect against roadside bombs in Iraq. Lead shot suppliers say this device requires a large amount of lead.

$3,500/ton, that is almost $2/pound for scrap. Doesnt seem right. I do know that ammo for guns is way up. 30-06 cartridges are now $23/for a box of 20 used to be about $14 for 20. .223 rounds are up too.

Grand Rapids PD and Consumers Power set up a sting the other day - set a roll of copper wire at a construction site with a tracking device on it. Wasn"t long before the caught a bunch of culprits!

(Glad I saw this coming, and stocked up on lead wheelweights for bullet making before this crisis!) (Was a time when tire dealers would give you a 5gallon bucket for nothing, just to see you struggle to carry it off!)

I wonder "if this LEAD problem " is evident in all areas of the Nation what this will do to the costs of new and scraped batterys ?.. right now the only peolpe that are making any decent return from recycled ones are scrap yards and remanufacturers ?
Here in Upsate NY the scrap payback is barely one dollar per auto size and core charges for newly purchased is five dollars.

Well they already have banned the use of lead ammo in some areas of California.

Arnold passed AB821 a few months ago.

We had a local recycler hit one night where the thieves came in, loaded the companys bumper pull trailer with metals salvaged from old catalytic converters and disappeared into the night.

They got away with salvaged platinum and rhodium to the tune of $600,000 on a small utility trailer.

Sorry for the incomplete story. The Lead theft Crisis as reported, is in Great Britain on Centuries old Structures which have been Roofed with Lead Sheet for a long time and now that it is being stolen they are required to Reroof with like Roof Material but as soon as it is installed it also is stolen.JC

Ray, do you have a favorite mixture for bullet making. I came across some 50/50 solder bars. I can't rememer, but I put something like 2 1/2 pounds of wheel weights and about 1/8 or 1/4 pounds of the solder. Seemed to make a good .357 bullet.
