On my MF 1085 the pto shaft runs continuously. However, when I put a load on it it stops and then I engage the pto lever. How do I fix it?

Hi,
Assuming that the drive is ok when engaged, the problem is likely to be a worn IPTO drum brake pad. The attached picture which should be similar to yours shows '22' as the brake pad.
It can normally be accessed with care through the left hand inspection cover. Drain the transmission oil. Remove the footplate and any pipework to give you the best access. If you have aux hydraulics carefully undo the bulkhead fittings. With the plate removed you will see the pad and its operating cylinder. Remove the two bolts and remove the complete assembly. Remove the piston and check the seal condition and for any scoring. The pad will probably be the older smooth type. New pads have a rough surface to provide better 'stopping power'. Check the outside of the IPTO drum for a wear groove from the pad. If it is excessive a new pad may not be enough to rectify the problem. Refit the unit with a new face O ring but only tighten the bolts to 5lb.ft. Align the side cover spiggot onto the IPTO valve and refit.
If working correctly a laden PTO should stop from working speed in 3 to 5 seconds. A short period of bedding in may be required for a drum with wear present.
