Having trouble with gas engine.most of parts that I buy I have to get for 175 diesel. I want to switch tractor over to diesel and wonder if I could convert gas engine over to diesel .

You engine is a gas version of the diesel 212 Perkins which we used in all of our 165s in Britain since about 1968. It is possible but not economical to convert your engine to a diesel. But if you want to do an engine swap the 236 engine found in your 175s will swap over. You will have to modify the wiring loom and maybe the fuel tank and rad. In fact any engine used in a Massey Ferguson will fit your clutch bell-housing the front cradle is another issue, but should be right in your tractor.
Good luck and come back to tell us how you got on so we may know of any pitfalls in future.

You can replace the gasser with a diesel engine, but it's going to be far simpler and probably about the same money in the end to trade tractors. I don't think changing the gas engine over to run on diesel is economically feasible at any level.

By the time you get a cylinder head, diesel pistons, injection pump and injectors with all lines I bet you could find a complete 236 or 248 engine cheaper at a salvage yard.

236 would be my choice. Plus you will need radiator and other small parts such as fuel supply for heater etc.

Well, it could be Sam's guess, or a Continental Z176, I happen to have one of each, and both been rebuilt, not for everybody, but the cost of a diesel, the 'cradle' as Sam calls it, basket is the word around here, pivot housing? If the new engine doesn't fit your old front clip, you got to buy one of them too. Either repair what you have, or do like Bret said, swap whole tractors. Repairing, even rebuilding what you got now is probably the cheapest option...

I decided to try and salvage 165 gasser and was told my engine knock could be the balancer at oil pump since the knock is not all the time.Under a load the engine does not knock , low idle sounds good, sometimes mid rpm sounds good. I wonder how to tell if it is actually the balancer. This engine was rebuilt years ago but tractor set mostly.it may have at MOST 150-250hrs.
