MF 165 (Hydraulic Fluid)

My links weren't working so I checked the hydraulic fluid and the dipstick indicated the system was empty. Now, what type of hydraulic fluid should I look for? Is there a specific? And, where do I refill the system? Thanks guys.

not sure on the hydraulic fluid, I've used a good quality mid weight (SAE46). The book calls for M-1129 specifications?, 8 gallon capacity. The fill on my 165 is on top next to the gear shift, left side, very large hex flange nut.

Nick S. is correct. What does the owner"s manual say? The current Permatran is III, I think, and it"s an all purpose, thin, multi-weight hydraulic fluid that is compatible with hydraulic and transmission/rear axle requirements including wet brakes IF you have a later model 165. An "Equivalent" fluid that meets MF specs is also acceptable if you desire a cheaper alternative.

If you have multi-power, buy perma-tran (Perma-Tran 821XL is the current fluid from AGCO) from your dealer, or atleast a hy-tran fluid. Engine oil does not have the additives the multi-power needs.

you need to use Permatran 821xl, same as older 1129. Get if from MF or AGCO dealer. Since it seems you have not yet done this type of maintenance you should also consider draining all the fluid and get a good clean start. Clogged filter could also contribute to poor hydraulics, and cleaning or replacing hydraulic filter is easy if you have typical 2-stage clutch and not IPTO. MF 165 Operators manual covers this or do search on this site. Do it right and not worry for another 750 hrs :)
