A friend of mine asked me about this model (165)
He is looking for a good tractor and found this in the paper. What are the pro, and cons about this tractor? What do they sell for usually. Thanks so much Don

Hi,
More pros than cons. Assume you are in the States so this view is UK based. Generally a very sound tractor in all areas. Early ones, exhaust on left hand side had a '203 58HP engine. Later ones had the '212, exhaust on right. If it is an early one it may have dry brakes in which case test thoroughly for any signs of the brakes jamming on...all or nothing. Later ones with oil immersed brakes had no problems. Quite expensive to replace dry brake actuators.
If it is a Multi-Power transmission test thoroughly. You cannot tow MP tractors to start them. Check for solid drive and engine braking in MP 'High' and drive in 'Low'. The 'Hill-hold' should work OK which means that the tractor will not run backwards if a forward gear is engaged unless you press the clutch pedal to the bottom of the second stage. Difficulty in changing gear in 'High' is normal if the tractor is on a slope.
Does it have an Independant PTO (engaged without pressing the clutch pedal). Make sure that the PTO stops within about 5 seconds when disengaged without load. Check for good drive as well. Repairs can be expensive for parts and labour.
Check the whole steering system for wear especially in the vertical shaft and bushes in the front axle casting. Have an assistant turn the wheel back and forth. If it has power steering the system works by having a controlled amount of free movement. If this is exceeded with wear the steering efficiency will be reduced.
This sounds like a black list but it is no more than any other tractor. In fact I am looking for one myself in the UK.
Hope this helps.
