MF 165 Valve Clearances

Hello Guys

I'm sorta looking at my (new to me - I've put about 40 hours on it) 165 (212 engine) and thinking " well its running OK but since quite a bit of stuff has to come off to adjust the valve clearances - I bet its not been done since Adam was a cowboy" . . . would I be correct in thinking this way, and that I'd better make it a priority to attend to ??

Absolutely, valve clearances are frequently overlooked and many tractors spend their lives without it being checked until something goes wrong. Excess clearance will cause insufficient opening of the valves, 'hammering' of the rockers and in extreme possibly lead to a push rod un-seating. Insufficient clearance can lead to loss of compression through the valves not closing fully and burning of the seats. Removing the rocker cover will give you an opportunity to see if there is any sludge build-up as well as ensuring that the breather pipe and vent are clear. If the inside is relatively clean, great. If not, it's time for some flushing oil.
