Trouble shooting issue with the reverse o matic on my 204. It won't go forward or backward. I bought it recently and it worked until a few days ago. All of the sudden it stop moving. I thought i heard a clunk underneath and behind my seat, but wasn't sure if it was related.

So far I have done the following to trouble shoot:
1. Checked rocker arm above foot pedal into transmission - working fine
2. Checked oil level on right side near foot pedal - oil qt and half low. Filled to hole - didn't fix problem
3. Check filter on left front side. 1 inch of sludge in bottom of filter. Cleaned filter and reinstalled - didn't fix the problem
4. Drained oil from sump. Remove both front and back plugs. Oil from front plug was chocolate milk brown (2 gallons). Oil from back plug was whitish green (3 gallons).

I was surpirsed so much oil came out and that it was differnet color. Does this sump drain two oil sources? Why are the colors so strange. Why did I get 5 gallons - I didn't think the revers o matic held more than 2 gallons

If I want to clean the sump screen, do I take the plate off the bottom of the sump (looks like 8 bolts holding it on.

Thanks

If you heard a definite "clunk" from beneath the seat, I'd suspect a broken shear tube. This "tube" connects the gearbox output shaft, with the pinion shaft.
To access the tube, drain off some rear end oil, and remove the LHS round cover plate from the diff housing. With a flash-light, check the tube for a break around it's diameter. If so, remove the split pin, slide the transmission output shaft back into the shear tube completely, and slide it off the pinion. The complete assembly will then come out thru the inspection aperture.

Some of the Industrial Massey tractors had a separate fill for the instant reverse transmission section, and the diff section, while others had one oil for both sections (compartments). Yours would be the former. Replace that LHS canister filter.
Definitely remove the lower cast cover plate, also remove the bolt that's located centrally as well, and either wash or replace the gauze strainer.
Fill the front converter section with an ATF fluid. The rear section will perform satisfactorily with a Permatran (universal) type fluid.
Evan.

for the trans fluid you only pull the front plug the other plugs go to the axle and gears by the gear shifter and to the left you will see a large plug that is will you fill the axle with gear oil and not trans fluid for the trans fluid you fill the hole down by the pedals you also have a metal screen in the sump pan that may be stopped up but i would not try to do that without some help as it will be very messy
