I have a Massey 35, 2 stage clutch, no Multi-Power. I need to replace the transmission input shaft seals. I have I&T repair manuals. The manuals say in order to pull the input shaft assembly out, the front part of the lower shaft has to be pulled to allow the PTO driven gear to drop down so that it is out of the way of the upper shaft bearing carrier. I understand the logic behind this. The problem is there appears to be a snap ring on the lower shaft that prevents it from being pulled thru said gear. How is one supposed to remove that snap ring when we can't even see it or feel it?

Bob,

I think some pictures would help. Also, do you have a 3 speed with High/ Low? M-F calls this a 6- speed. I have a service manual for a 202 which I think is the same, but the pictures are terrible. I got the book from Jensales, if I had known better I would have went to AGCO.

Pics.... a 6 speed 1963 MF 35...NO multi power..

NOT all 6 speeds are the same..as in different disassembly procedures..

There were only 2 transmission choices for the 35, the basic 3 x 2 (6 speed) and later the 6 speed with Multi-Power. Mine is the basic 6 speed.

The pictures you show of the clutch housing area look exactly like my tractor. We have done the double split and the transmission cover is off. My question is how does that lower shaft come out? There is about .25 inch of longitudinal movement. It seems to hit something solid going forward or back. The tractor is a 1960.

Look close they are hard to see end of snap ring. I use a small screwdriver to pry end out. After removing snap rings the gear just pulls forward and drops down off upper gear. Look close to washer after removing snap rings. It will only go one way to allow snap ring to be replaced.

On this 6 speed as per pictures......1963 MF 35
NOTE*
NOT all 6 speeds used in the MF 35's are the same configuration...Some internal components can not be swapped .
A PARTS BOOK is a GREAT INFORMATION SOURCE.

Good day Bob N.Y.

My family owned (purchased new) a 1960 MF 35 6 speed NO Multi-Power,three cylinder diesel Perkins. Also a 1963 MF 35 X

The MF 35 X 3 cylinder Diesel Perkins, had a totally different calibrated FUEL PUMP,with Injectors that must be used with the MF 35 X Fuel pump.

The 1963 Engine developed 44 HP instead of the 1960 MF 35's 38 HP.

Do gain the HP at the PTO,Massey FERGUSON changed the Transmission gearing to the PTO, so that standard PTO would stay be the same,BUT the ENGINE RPM was greater,as well the FORWARD speed of the TRACTOR then was increased.

Bob...Owner MF 35's since new.

I should add that the front PTO housing bearing cap and the front snap ring have been removed. The manual says the lower shaft can be pulled out the front at that point. No go. I just looked at it again. There is another snap ring at the back off the lower shaft that appears to hold the bearing for the counter shaft. Is there any advantage to removing it? When I move the lower shaft fore and aft, the PTO gear moves with it as if it is attached, not just splined. There is only a quarter inch of freedom between the front wall of the transmission case and the counter shaft. What am I missing?

So on this one there is a retainer on the back and the shaft comes out the back. Is that correct?

Yes....The PTO DRIVE SHAFT as per these pictures was removed by removing the shaft towards the AFT of the Transmission.

There was NO indication of the THRUST WASHERS deterioration. Deterioration was evident after the removal of the HIGH LOW Planetary..
IF you decide to inspect / REMOVE the H/L Planetary.......DO NOT let the assembly separate as you carry it to the work bench.!!!!!!!!!...........:)

Which LOWER SHAFT (POWER to PTO) does your MF 6 speed have...????

NOT all MF 35's 6 speeds have he same internal parts, and yet are both MF 6 speeds with NO Multipower.

There are some really good hints provided in the above posts.

However, you may also benefit from a complete teardown of this trans on YouTube Bundy Bears channel. It helped me a lot on my 1955TO35. Tricky bits in there. I replaced seals and bearings while in there freeing up shifting.

....I just discovered an internal snap ring in front of the PTO gear. Is that what is hanging me up?

Looks like you should remove as per pics/write up Group ll -Section B-Part 1
