MF 35 Power steering value assembly

We are trying to find a replacement for our MF35 power steering valve assembly part 1755047M91 . We received a used one that is very similar to ours and has the same replacement part 1018735M92, but there are extra pieces on it, that ours does not have, and keep the banjo bolts from seating all the way down into the valve assembly. Is the after market piece made slightly different from the original and do we need new banjo bolts fittings to be able to use it?

The banjo fittings need the right length bolts. If someone has put bolts that are too long they may not seal before they bottom out. Don't
ask me how I know.

Thanks. We knew we wouldn t be able to use the old banjo bolts with the new-to-us piece. They fit our old valve assembly perfectly. What we were wondering is if the other valve assembly we received is an after market part and that new banjo bolts will need to be bought, or do we have the wrong valve assembly ? Wish there was a way to post pictures to show what I m talking about .

Look at the various valves for your tractor

I am no 35 expert, but I do know that similar looking valves are available on a number of models, in fact even Ford's. I have no idea if that means if it will or will not work. But if the spool in the valve is not in great shape, it is going to leak and or not work well. Your replacing yours for a reason, how is this one better?

Thank you for the info on how to post a picture! Will do that. In reply to the question on replacing ours, We found that ours is missing the check valve that goes in the return port. There s no part number for that piece, it has to be ordered with the entire valve assembly. That is an expensive piece that we weren t counting on having to buy. We found a used one for half price, on line and ordered it. According to the company all of their valve assembly s are like the one we received and they have never known someone to have a problem with them. Since they are listed with an aftermarket part # we wanted to check if that was the reason for the difference before proceeding.

A picture of the part missing would help. Not familiar with a check valve. Does it show up in parts book? If so which item?

Our original is the grey one on the left. The parts look identical except for the inside of the openings. The one we received has what looks like reducers or something inside all the holes, and the return port has a nut attached on the top. Ours has an indent at the top of each opening for O rings attached to the banjo bolt to seat in. Like I said, the bolts bottom out before turning all the way into the green valve assembly.

This picture is from our shop manual. It says the part can be removed with a screwdriver, but the entire assembly must be purchased to replace it. Ours did not have one in it. Our parts manual shows the piece, but it is not labeled and does not have a part number by itself.

I am not qualified to give you any input on the part comparison other than green "might" mean it came off a John Deere of the same vintage. No idea

Did the steering ever work? Tractor new to you? How did you conclude a check valve was missing and what was the issue you were having to cause you to dig into it?

I do know if that large center spool is out of round or is worn, fluid will pass through. If that happens you will have weak steering and likely it will leak out of the top of the steering column.

I have wondered if the green meant John Deere also. We bought the tractor used, best we can tell it is a 1961 model. It runs excellent, but some of the power steering parts were missing. Got the missing parts it needed & put it together. When I tested it out, power steering fluid came pouring out the breather vent. Upon doing more research on it I decided we needed to check things in the steering column. I replaced all the worn out bushings, O rings & bearings. As I was putting it back together we came across the reference to the check valve in the shop manual. Checking our valve assembly I realized it was not in it. This began the search for replacing the valve assembly without having to spend $600. I m to the point that I d almost be willing to pay that, if I knew it would give us the exact right part, but since the original part in the book has now been replaced with an aftermarket part I wasn t sure what changes might have been made to it.

Soon after buying mine, I threw in the towel on restoring it to original factory condition. I am a one tractor owner and need it to get work done. Eventually I will reach a point where I am focused on cosmetics, but for now its been about fixing and repairing to make it as functional for my needs as I can.

Thank you for the link, I will check it out. Restoring would be something I d like to do. But Right now we just need it running. We have a tree farm and need the tractor for mowing really bad. Been trying to figure out the power steering since last fall, never expected it would take this long.

Thank you for the offer. I think we have finally discovered that the used part we received is different from what is supposed to go to our tractor. We could make it work by buying new lines & fittings, but the cost would end up being almost the same as buying a new part that is supposed to go to our tractor. Really appreciate the help & feedback we received.

These are the books we ve been using, as well as a parts manual that looks similar to the service manual. Pretty sure I bought them all from Yesterday s Tractor. They have been very helpful, coupled with knowledge from guys that know tractors.
