MF 35 starting fluid

I just inherited a MF35 in great shape. However, my grandfather always started it(the past 8 years) with starter fluid and said it wouldn't start without it. I know that that is not great for the cylinders and am wondering if there is an adjustment on the fuel system I can do to get it to turn over on its own.

To my knowledge starting fluid is the only way to get the Standard 4 banger in an old 35 started. As much as I dislike it, that is how we have been doing it for decades on that tractor. My Dad bought it new in 1959.

One of these days I'm going to take it apart, check it all out, reset the timing, get the glow plugs working and then see what happens. But as it is, once its going it works fine. And has for a long time.

Timothy, If it is a 3 cyl perkins it should have
an intake manifold preheater. To activate turn the
starter switch backward for 15-20 seconds. If it
doesn't work it likely needs the preheater. A wire
and a fuel tube attach to it. If that is working
it will not need starting fluid. If it is a 4 cyl
the other post is probably right. Chuck

Use very little starting fluid and have the motor turning over when you squert it and you shouldnt have any trouble.

Jeese you Americans love your starting fluid lol. If shes a diesel 35 shouldnt need any fluid if shes properly tuned, i recommend getting the injectors and fuel injector overhauled makes a big difference to the starting, and as one of the other posts said be sure and use the heater plug. Owned over 25 tractors and not one of them so much as smelt starter fluid. Hope this helped
