MF 50 starter

What would cause the starter drive housing to break. It's a diesel A3-152 delco starter. It worked good for years. Thank's

check ring gear for broken or missing teeth or something lodged between them, also check bendix for missing tooth or badly worn bushing,also check bushing in bendix end of starter, if nothing is missing or worn to the point that the bendix is trying to run on top of the ring gear it was proably father time caught up with it.
