MF 50 transmission roar

My 50 is starting to roar noticebly in low range and there is a vibration. In high range there is some but not much. Any suggestions on what this may be or how to diagnose the problem. It has 80-90 gear oil that is a few years old. PTO and hydraulics work very good.

Number one problem is the 80-90 gear grease in it. Tractor transmissions and rear ends are supposed to have hydraulic oil in them. You most likely have a bearing going out. I'm very surprised your hydraulics work with that heavy grease in it.

I had a roar or rumble in a ferguson 40 that would radiate up through the fenders and could feel vibration in the tractor. The noise would vary depending on the gear it was in. When I tore it down I found the pinion bearing race was totally shot. So I would assume you have a bad bearing somewhere. The correct oil for these tractors is GL-1 90wt. It serves as both the gear oil and the hydraulic fluid.

That is NOT the oil used in and called for. If you have a manual that calls for gear oil it is a
fake. I agree with WWTP. The original manuals
called for green mineral 80/winter and 90 in sum.
Now GL-1 is used. If you were in Minnesota and
used in the winter you would have already Rpl.it.

Well I just went out and checked the old oil bucket and it is a straight 90 wt GL-1. The oil I was about to put in it was a GL-5 so I am thankful you have brought that to my attention. Still since I have GL-1 in the transmission now I still have an issue with the whine.

You arent the only one to have made that mistake. We were a MF dealer from '67 to '81 and still have a lot of MF tractors around us that we service and collect. The book says to use 80/90 hydraulic oil and most people mistake that for 80/90 gear oil. (I dont think that 80/90 gear oil was even invented when those manuals were printed)
