MF Planters

I gotta question for you all, why are Massey Planters so expensive? I realize the two rows are popular with hobby/sweet corn farmers, but when I see one on greedbay its usually on par or slightly higher than a JD 71 and its a rust bucket.

I"ve also never seen the 4-row 468 and I suspect those were made by Oliver/white..

Anyways, I"m just curious,

There's a certain market for Massey implements with MF owners who just HAVE to have MF implements to go with their tractor. Only a very small, limited market, but with those planters being in relatively short supply, that drives the cost up. Also, this time of the year, people will pay just about anything to get a working planter. 2 or 3 months from now the prices return to reality.

They're good planters for the most part, but they have certain liabilities too. One is the plates are dang near IMPOSSIBLE to find (aftermarket or used) New plates (through AGCO/MF) are pricey.

Keep looking. One will just happen along at a good price. I paid $435 for this #39. It's in extremely good shape. Found it on EBAY about 20 miles from home. Not this time of the year though, in December.

The #39 (and the 4-row version, #78) were upgrades to the old Massey Harris #38. They were built in Canada at an old Massey Harris plant. Not sure about other models though.

I just sold a 39 on there for 700 and the comparable JD planters are going for over a grand to 1500.

My cousins had a MF 468 planter. They are a newer version of the MF 46. I think the only difference between the 46 and 468 was the 468 had a press wheel between the seed tube and the covering wheel. I think they used the same plates.

Does anyone know where I can purchase plates for the MF 39 planter? Looking for corn plates.

Most plates can you can buy at the Mf dealer for $16. each. I used Red Trac, Vindland , Ontario, Canada. Two days to order in stock.
