I've got a MF135 Perkins 3cyl gas that the fan belt came off of. When I checked it out i notice the crank would slide in and out. It was still locked as far as rotating. I put the belt back on and finished working with it contiually looking at alt to make sure belt didn't come off again and it run for about another 3 or 4 hrs with no problem. Although the pulley would move from time to time causing to belt to cock a little. What would cause the crank pulley to slide in and out. Thanks

Check the big bolt in the centre of the bottom pulley is tight. If it is tight and your bottom pulley is moving in & out more than 6 mm-1/4 inch, your crank thrust bearings are wearing some, but if your drive belt stays OK and your engine does not slow or labour when you press your clutch pedal, you should be OK for a long time to come.

What would cause it the thrust bearing to wear out prematurely? Contributing factors: dirty oil, keeping the foot on the clutch when not necessary, failing to readjust the clutch when the free-play is gone.
