MF2705 Weak in Reverse

We have a 2705 with a 24 speed trans that when you put it in reverse it will move but has very little power. The transmission over speed light on the dash come on. I think that is what is said. Lower reverse gears helps but it still is weak. We have changed the hydraulic filters and made no difference. Anyone have any ideas?

The red lite is an indication low oil presure in the transmission, which is why it is slipping in reverse. You have a couple of blown o'rings in the transmission. Time for a 24 speed overhaul. Sorry!!

Do not run the tractor until it is fixed. Somebody said that on this forum once. If you do not slip the clutch paks too much you may only need to replace some orings and seals to fix it.

Definitely a pressure loss due to a leak.

DO NOT run this tractor in any range other than intermediate, and only then to move it where you need to in order to work on it.

Before splitting and removing the 24 speed unit for overhaul, check the following:

1. Make sure the shifter linkage is shifting the transmission control valve on the right side under the cab all the way. If the linkage is loose or out of adjustment, the reverse/low clutch may be only partially pressurizing.

2. If the above is OK, unbolt the control valve from the side of the transmission, and check the gasket. The original gaskets had a habit of blowing out between passages and would cause this reverse slipping problem. The new ones are reinforced to prevent this.

I worked on a lot of these tractors in the early 80's when they were current. Those 24 speeds, especially the earlier ones, were a major disaster for Massey. If you need more help with it, e-mail me and I'll give you whatever info I can.

It depends on what shift pattern you have on the
hydraulic shift lever. The early ones had an "H"
pattern, the later have an "L" pattern. The later units use the low pack for reverse, so if you have a weak reverse you should also have a weak forward low. The earlier tractors used a different combination for the forward reverse shuttle. Most of these early tractors were converted to the newer style, but not all.

If it were a pump problem, you would have a pronounced slipping problem in high as well. You also may have a significant engine load when shifting from intermediate to high or low, because the intermediate pack will be trying to disengage hydraulically when either the low or high packs are trying to engage. This results in the 24 speed turning to scrap if it is driven that way for more than a few seconds.
