Mad Farmer, Sometime when time and temperature is in your favor to expirement try this assuming you have a reisitor in you ignition wiring. Do your normal start procedure for cold start but don't turn ignition on till engine has made 3/4 revolution to start. See what happens.
 
or pull the choke out? What I did to get mine to fire in the cold after previously failing to start was change the spark plugs, give it 5-6 notches of throttle and pull the choke out for a tiny bit and then put it back in, I played with the choke and eventually it just fired up, easiest way to prevent flooding is to start it with the fuel off, and as soon as it starts you can open the fuel.

You think the resistor heats up that fast?

I can see having the key on when the points happen to be closed being a problem. If the points are open there is no current to heat up the resistor.

You don't always know if points are open or closed. Try it and see. Can't hurt anything.
