MM U rust in heads

I have a MM UTS that has lot of scale and rust inside the heads. I would like to find a way to clean it out if possible.
Also the block is likely in the same condition. I will attach two pictures to show the amount of scale and rust
that has come out so far.
Thanks for any help,
Bill.

Wonder if I could use a pressure washer now on the heads?
Would that do any damage?
Thanks,
Bill.
Just remember, the rust used to be the head material. There may be weaker spots in it so I wouldn't go too crazy on cleaning solutions, as in chemicals. You could try and continually flush it with a garden hose back and forth.

The block is in the same condition. Would it be OK to take off the water pump and try flushing the block out?
I've just used air and a wire so far to loosen things up.
Thanks.

Air will get most out.

That is a lot of rust going by the picture. If it were mine I would be looking for a used head to replace the one at current. Should not be too difficult to find I would think.

While that amount of rust is of concern you have to remember this about heavy rust and flaking scale. Iron oxide (rust) can expand between 7 and 11 times its original thickness as the oxide expands. Just for example a flake that comes off a 1/16” thick(0.0625”) at 10 times would reduce the actual metal thickness lost to 0.00625” or little over 6 thousandths.

I had that happen. Rotating it on engine stand , high pressure air and shop vacuum . What mess ,pretty frustrating ,think you got all and wallah! There’s another chunk ,
.ultrasonic washers.
I put heads in a container of purple power( degreaser ) ( no aluminum, ) or dawn dish detergent , drive it around in back of pickup a week or two on bumpy roads will get it loose without a lot arm power. Let dry in hot sun . High pressure air and vacuum.
I having very good luck with it (dawn ) and scotch bright heavy duty . Seem to saturate the rust so swell up and releases. Not all but some.
Might help ya ,

You don't want any little pieces getting into you valves when you run it.
I had a truck that I bought with a steel tube between the air filter and engine that got rusty. Some rust got into the engine and ruined it.

Looks more like casting sand, sediment or something foreign. than rust. Rust normally in thin flat flakes.

I forgot to remove all the soft plugs before had the engine block cleaned ,A huge mistake . What a mess that, at least some of this , it could have been avoided with my flat head engine. I forgot to mention .

I agree. I kept turning the heads over and using air and just when you think that must be all the rust then more comes out!
I think I have it pretty clean now.
