Model A Radiator

I was wondering how hard would it be to recore a radiator on a 48' A? Or should I leave it to the professionals to do? Thanks Josh

It is very easy for the most part. Be very careful taking the bolts out of the radiator top/bottom. You can plan on a couple of the bolts breaking off, so i would heat the cast to make them come out easier. Simply a unbolt insert new core rebolt back together.

I have done 4 of them so far.

Did it on aJD 48 B last fall. Took 2 of us 5 hours on a complete core exchange. Make sure you get
two new gaskets. New core from JD was manufactured in Ireland. Not made as well and
as heavy material as the original one.ggp

I recommend using hardening form-a-gasket on the new gaskets. I used it on ours and it really guarantees a leak proof seal between the flanges. Pat Browning discovered this after I had done it and took the credit for the great idea God rest his Soul. I miss his posts. Get a new bolt kit and save yourdself a lot of time. Kits come with all the sizes and square heads to make an original looking radiator.

They are not all that hard to do. I've done 5 and getting ready to work on #6. I take the radiator off the tractor and then try to get the bolts out. Be careful, there will more than likely be some that wring off. There are studs and bolts and a lot of them will have to have heat put to them. Be careful and bring the heat up gradualy on these old castings or you may crack it. Also let the heat come down gradualy. I use an old stove oven for heating purposes. Correct Connection has the proper bolt kits. Good luck.

No they're not that hard to recore if you don't rush through the job. The top and bottom gaskets are the same. The worst part is getting the bolts out that are threeded into the casting. So what if the bolt/nuts break. You will want the bolt hardware alopng with the core and gaskets. You might try Steiner Tractor in MI. There are others also.
