Model V transmission

I am going to be picking up a V. Supposedly it is stuck in gear. Is there anything I should look for when I pop the top to the tranny? Can I pop the top to the tranny easily? If I can't, what would be the best way to get it on the trailer without causing any serious damage to it? I will have to pull it on to the trailer by hand (which doesn't sound like much fun if the wheels are locked). Any tricks that I should know?

I thought about putting it on plywood or boards to help it slide, but don't know if I will be adding friction to the equation.

Thanks.

Just pull the gear shift housing off & you can get to the gears, or pull the spark plugs out & the mtr. will turn freely.

Pat, I am the one that told you to pop the cover off so:
1. Make sure to wipe down the areas around the cover to transmission case well with a solvent and clean off the top of the ear shift cover to avoid introducing any contaminants in the transmission.
2. Try to move the shift lever to the neutral position if it will stay.
3. Remove the 4 hold down bolts and pull the cover straight upward. On the bottom of the cover you will see the rails and shift forks mechanism.

I am attaching the VA/VAC parts list dwg from the CaseIH site. This is what you should find, but based on your description it is possible you might find something bent, broken or out of alignment.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the suggestion. The motor turns free when the clutch is pushed in, just that the tranny is stuck in gear and thus the rear wheels won't move.

As I type this I got to thinking that maybe if we hold the clutch down it will roll, but the owner states it won't move.... hummmmm something to try. I guess it will take a little sleuthing on our part.

Thanks.

You sure its the tranny and not the brakes stuck??? Will it move with the clucth in or just the engine crank with the clutch in. If it cranks with the clutch depressed but won't move with the clutch depressed its probably brakes.

If this is indeed a V and not a VA series, there is a rod that extends forward from the front of the shifter cover. It may have a cast extension on the cover so you don't see it. Push this rod backward to the intermediate position and see if this releases the gears. This happens to my V all the time and the extension has been removed and I can push the rod back with my heel.

BTW, there is absolutely no commonality between the V series and VA series transmissions. The V series uses a Clark transmission and differential. The VA series uses a Case built transmission.

Just thought I would put that in as there seems to be some misunderstandine between these two completely different tractors. The V and VA series share virtually no common parts... Gene

Gene, Case does not seem to list the V (I couldn't find it) in their parts site, is it too old?

Jim

It is very likely that it is too old. They were only produced in 1940-1941 and 1942. Basically a parts built tractor to compete in the F12 category of tractor while Cas was designing their own tractor with the Va-Vac series.

I see sales on ebay with parts listed to fit V and VA tractors. I have tried to correct these vendors. Basically was told to mind my own business. Wonder how many people have ordered parts for their V series tractors and gotten VA series parts. One guy tried to sell PTO assembly from a VAC to fit a VC tractor. No way will it fit... Gene

You are right, I see that stuff all the time on 430/530 advertised on ebay especially the tin. Nearly always advertise it will fit both. 530 is more like 630 than 430, a lot of common parts especially the tin if the 530 is a diesel don't think much of anything is common on 430.

Some of these guys have ebay stores and look to be salvage yards, should know better, guess they don't care as long as it sells. I found one I will never buy from again on used parts from a working tractor!! If it was working, it wasn't working well. (<:

sounds like you are stuck in two gears --the worn shifter didn't pull the tranny all the way out of one gear before it released it but allowed it to engage second gear. Now the two speads have loaded up the pressure and won't allow the forks to disengage the second gear. With the cover off, line up the cross-tracks in the shifter shafts and slide all the gears to the neutral position.
