Moline SH corn picker

I just got a SH model corn picker, took it out in the field and it plugs up. I raised the head all the way, that helped but when I had 30ft left of the row it plugged up again. The tractor I was using is a late model jet star 3 super in 1st low for ground speed. the rollers in the head don"t seem to snap the stalks down. the stalks drag through it before the ears of corn come off. Is there any adjustments I can make to the rollers? or what are suggestions.

I have a couple of parts SHs, 1 is a MF #4 I'm in NE IL, 14 miles from Lake Michigan, on the WI border. IF it comes to parts, I can help, I think maybe your rollers are worn. Hi,

The knowledge I have of pickers with snapping rollers is limited to a mounted JD 227, but it had adjustments for spacing on rollers, and IIRC, the closer they were, the more "aggressive" they became.

That being said, after they have worn a bit, this adjustment was less and less useful. Later on we actually laid a weld bead on the "tops" of the knobs, to help grip the stalk and take it down and through.

Set your snapping rolls as close as you can get them without knocking. If they are worn bad they won't take the trash through. To build them up with a welder you have to put the weld in the right places. DO NOT weld on top of the knobs or on the middle of the roll. It will make a corn sheller out of it and the corn will be on the ground. Weld in front of the knob where you see the most wear, and build it up to the original height. Since rolls are cast iron, weld a small amount on one side, then rotate the roll and weld on the otherside. Then let it cool and go to another roll. Good luck

There must be adjustments on the bottom of the rollers, maybe even on the top. I used to pick corn with a MM 320. If I had my ops. manual handy I could look it up and see what it says for adjustment. The rollers should pull the stalk through and the ears would pop off. Sounds like yours doesn't even pull the stalk down so it must be too wide. I am sure an owners manual would say what the spacing should be and I know I have one in the shop.

There are adjustments at the bottom of the rollers. I had the identical problem with mine and I moved the rollers as close together as I could and fixed the plugging problem. Now I'm trying to figure out how to keep the ears from bouncing out onto the ground.
