all 4 intakes stuck solid as granite.

took hours of spraying solvent and oil and tapping on them with a copper maul and brass drift till they started to move, then I'd hamemr em down, spray down, then move on to the next. after 5 minutes they would come back up slowly under spring pressure. after 2 hours of that the other day, and an hour today, 2 intakes are completely free and all 4 exhaust are fine, and 2 intakes still stick a hair. first tap is a lil sticky, then they move fine. one shows signs of just about being ready to be normal and smooth... both will keep getting worked on while I'm waiting for parts.

I have a head kit coming from napa, and rods coming from a couple different places.

I'll spend a few minutes every time Iwalk by and hose them down with more oil and solvent and give a tap on them.. at this point i'm 98% sure if I just stuck rods in and went they would be fine and loosen up when running. I'm going to drain and clean the gas tank, and get a laod of new gas and treat tha bajeebers out of it, same with some detergent / solvent addatives to the oil change, and then once I start her I'm gonna let her run till warmed a bit, check adjustment on valves real quick, and then get her started, and probably let her run about an hour on a temp tank that I will run heavilly treated and lubed fuel in.

I'll swap in a sacrificial set of plugs as i know I will foul them up a bit doing so..

that's the paln anyway.

so far I've been having odd luck on tractors.

just came back in from pulling a rim off another tractor, had a flat, just spent an hour breaking it down.. tubes shot.. gotta get another one in the morning... breaking the bead off the rim about wore me out.

tire iron slipepd once and mildly popped me inthe lower lip.. that smarts... I keep tellin myself i'm gonna stop messin with tires.. but.. I guess it's the .. uh.. 'cheap' in me that makes me keep doing my own tire work...

"All" four intakes stuck? How would that happen? Moisture, tractor been sitting for awhile?
A man with as many tractors as you have is going to have some issues from time to time. Hope they don't come in three's this time. Enjoy your posts, thanks.

There have been many reports of stuck valves in small engines with ohv.Ethanol gas is the top suspect.B&S and Honda should have service bulletins on the problem.Lots of snowmobile engines with problems when we got stuck with moonshine gas.I think the alcohol may be cleaning the oil off the valve stems.Check out Forestry Forums for info on stuck valves.Could oil and alcohol make a good glue on idle engine parts?

My youngest brother runs the shop for yellow cab in Charleston. They got a bad load of gas and had A bunch of stuck valves. They had a couple of cars in almost every shop in town. They fixed a bunch themselves finally they would pull the intake and clean the valves with spray solvent like you are doing.

I am simply amazed. Long ago when I worked as a professional mechanic I stopped saying "now I've seen it all" because I eventually realized I never would. It would be interesting if you could positively nail down the cause.

I use 1 ounce of marine formula Sta-bil in every 5 gallon can of gas I get. I use the gas in lawn mowers, generators, tractors and a golf cart and I haven"t had any trouble even with engines that sit all winter.

Mark

i had gotten lax and stopped using stabil, as I wasn't keeping gas around much.

I'd go grab 5g for the lawnmower every couple weeks, and don't have a gasser truck anymore, and was using the diesel tractor for most of hte mowing this year.. will have to get back to using it for sure

Might be a stupid observation, but you stated that the only valves with problems are the intake with the rubber seals that prevent oil from being sucked in. If the valves guides are tight would the small amount of oil that gets brought in be the difference in lubrication. I know they are there for a reason, just spitballing.

i think this crappy gas the gov't is pushing on us is the problem.

this machine ran since 63 with intake seals and no issues. put ethanol gas in for a few years and screech.... cling,,, cling...

I've been using Seafoam, basically a lightweight oil, at about 1oz per gallon of gas. It claims to do everything but whiten your teeth.

Related to the E-10 problem, my father-in-law recently introduced me to a marine product "E-Zorb" which supposedly binds with water and allows that water to pass through filters and be burnt without the corrosion risks that water would normally present. It's also an octane boost, I think, to make up for the fact that water bound up in this way doesn't provide much energy when it burns. Anyone have any experience with this?

I'm planning to continue using Seafoam on the small engines and tractors, but I may put a bit of the E-Zorb into the boat for the winter.

Greg

gotta ask..

what kind of oil were you running?

and yes.. the gas probably done it..but what the heck happened to the oil? It was supposed to have some "cling" protection for long storage if it were an hd oil.

Top and bottom ones look like the ones I took out of a 5200 a few years ago that had "a slight miss at high RPMs". (anyone who knows Fords knew it was missing at ALL RPMs) That was a diesel though... never did figure out why they bent.
Thanks for sharing all the pics.

it had 15w40 c rated diesel oil in it.

probbaly didn't even have 20 hours on the oil, twas still golden honey colored.

(quoted from post at 04:06:42 11/22/11) I would start using Marvel Mystery Oil in the tank and in the crankcase. It will prevent this from happening.

John

I don't use the Marvel stuff (not that it's bad), I use stabil and 2 cycle oil in both gasoline and diesel. 100:1 mix rate. Keeps the lubricity up -- at least that's what I tell myself!

what was the compression?? did you pull the valve and check the carbon build up on the underside?.. if so..suspect bad cam timing or dist timing.. over advanced.....too large of main jet...

has to be something for all four intakes..

just curious....

with the gearing, i'd have to guess cam to crank timing is good.

she didn't feel advanced either...

recently saw this happen to a 4.3 chevy only one push rod though somehow dead gas got put in it you could smell it time the hood was raised replaced the bent rod, wires,,dist cap, rotor and plugs, compression checked o.k. still had a Skip poured 5 gals.high test gas in it was about out anyway didn't help any, engine had 250k so decided not to spend any more on it parked it, needed to move it out of the way a month later started up run like nothing ever happen, wonder if that gas had been causing another valve to try and stick.

i'm quite sure mine was bad gas related. I drained the tank and it was dark and smelly like turpentine!
