More 990 questions

Thanks for the answers to my last questions. I received my my manual and am reading it prior to pulling the engine on a 1976 449 engined 990. I have read most of it but need some things clarified.

When I pull the injection pump I need to make sure the marks align on the mounting area or make some marks myself. If I pull the injection pump by taking the three bolts out will the gear drop? Are there bolts that hold the gear to the pump? Can the pump only be mounted to the gear on one way? Manual is a little confusing.

Will the injectors come out easily or do I need a special too? Can I reuse the copper washers or need new?

Thanks in advance and again thanks for the prior help. I feel comfortable doing this but like to get everything figured out before starting.

You have to remove the whole timing cover or pump access cover to remove the injector pump gear(bolts on from front). The gear is bigger than the hole where the pump mounts. You have to remove the gear before you can remove the pump.

Timing marks are already on the gears, and are obvious when you get the cover off. Only one way to install the pump gear.

You need new washers, they are under $1 each at any good diesel shop. Every rebuild gasket kit I have ever bought has included them. If yours doesn't and you can't find any you could anneal the old ones and reuse.

No special tools to pull the injectors, I use a toolmaker's "die bar" but a big open end wrench will work equally well(I usually use 1 5/16" when I can't find my die bar).

Great answers

Gear bolted on but only fits pump one way. Timing marks on
gear. If I line up housing mark and gear to gear mark I am
good.

I will get new washers

Will the crank pulley come easily or will I fight it?

The crank pulley should come easy.

The timing marks on the front are all in relation to the sun gear. Only one place for them to go together, you have line up the sun gear to the marks on the crank and cam, then the pump.
