They sure wore some great hats in the day! I noticed a couple of 420 and 425 corn picker manuals on ebay.I hope to find one in a barn one day!

Reminds me of my younger days, Great Uncle had a McCormick combine (5 foot head) behind the 560 and his neighbor also had a McCormick behind the DC Case. I would haul oats to the graiery and bring back a brandy bottle and ice water!

Reminds me of scooping away the oats as Dad unloaded the A-6 into the wagon, I itch just thinking about it, LOL, thank's, Rod.

Loren,

Did your Case dealership sell many of these old combines? There were quite a few D and S series tractors around here, but I can"t think of a single Case combine. Don

We did well with the Case combines, from the galvinized Fs on up to the last Case combines built. Dad had a reputation as a Baler and Combine Man. I liked Tractors, better than combines.HeHe

My dad bought a 120 self propelled in 1956. I stil have it and used it a fer years back. Too slow using the cut off the stump and combine with wheat, but on swathed oats I could do 3 acres/hour getting over 100 bu/acre! Mine has spike teeth on the cylinder and concaves. Strong "D" motor!

By the 1960's most pull type combines around home had a blacksmith made A-frame wagon hitch added to keep a wagon under the unloading auger. Uncles's A-6 had one. The rocking motion of traveling around the hilly fields alongside the combine helped dry oats self-level a bit. We only had to scoop the last dump on the wagon.

The combine had a Wisconsin engine, his 800 easily pulled the rig. The first picture shows a VAC pulling an A-6. I think I'd want a heavier tractor to pull an A-6 and a nearly full wagon on those hills.

Hi Loren,
Love those pictures, did you get the top 5 off of a seed book that Case put out? I know I have a seed book and those great pictures are in there.
Thanks Loren,sure liked them

I've got a A6 with what looks to be a factory trailer hitch on it. Probably not Case, but a aftermarket company. Its not a farmerized hitch. When I was a kid we always pulled a wagon alongside.

Dan,
You got it. Tons of info in that manual, The rest were covers on sales brocures, that I have in the harvesting section of my old Case Sales Manual.

I love those pics, especially the farmer wearing the tie on the LA (I think it's an LA anyways!) Don't think I'd want any of my VACs in front of that combine on my hills.

And at last! Now I know what a "swather" actually is! Nothing like that up here.
